Tips for the Living

Every man is a card, sent spinning into the world by that one Dealer with no tells.

If you look sharp, you’ll see that every life turns on a few big hands. You’ll be going along just like always and then something will tip you off—a clock ticking backwards, say, or a suicide king just staring at you funny. A blind man talking to angels only he can see.

You’ll look around the table, and you’ll see the same eight players: The Banker and the Sheriff, the Killer and the Kid. The Gambler, the Preacher, the Half-breed and the Drunk. One of them will be the Devil, and that’s what does us in, us Browns, because when you scare us we play smart: we play tight. But the tighter you play the Devil, the more you’re gonna lose.

The only way to beat the Devil is to go all in.
